IT’S WALK To School Month this October when the UK charity Living Streets is urging families across Scotland to walk to school to tackle ‘the growing inactivity crisis’ amongst children.
Just 43 per cent of primary school age children walk to school in Scotland, the charity for everyday walking states, compared with 70 per cent a generation ago. At the same time, it adds, levels of obesity and inactivity are on the rise with more than a quarter of Scottish children obese or overweight.
Stuart Hay, director of Living Streets Scotland, said: ‘Many of us need to start moving more and walking to school is a free and achievable way to fit more activity into a family’s day. We work in nearly 300 schools across Scotland to increase the number of pupils walking to school through WOW – our walk to school challenge.
