Opera Now

Winter 2025 In the Winter issue of Opera Now we turn the spotlight on American soprano Julia Bullock. She opens up to Jessica Duchen about life as an opera singer, a mother and the importance of activism in her life and work. As Jake Heggie celebrates 25 years since the premiere of his opera Dead Man Walking , we speak to the mezzos who have defined the role of Sister Helen, including Joyce DiDonato, Jamie Barton and Susan Graham. Freddie de Tommaso speaks about his role debut of Rodolfo in Luisa Miller at Les Arts Valencia and we profile the work of the Lambeth-based Pegasus Opera Company – an organisation The which brings together operatic excellence, community and a commitment to the next generation. We go behind the scenes at Curtis Opera School in its 100th year, meeting those in charge and learning about the secrets to its success and as Scottish Opera prepares for the world premiere of The Great Wave we preview the production, telling the story of Katsushika Hokusai and his famous woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa Designer Michael Levine invites us into his studio, where he is making the finishing touches for the new Eugene Onegin at Paris Opera, directed by Ralph Fiennes.
