Saying goodbye
I AM WRITING THIS, MY LAST EDITOR’S NOTE, from home as I begin my new position as deputy editor at the non-profit Inuit Art Quarterly. Like Q&Q, that publication is blessed with a dedicated readership who are enthusiastic about the subject and supporting emerging talent.
Much has changed in publishing in the last decade since I started at Q&Q: the rise of mega-publishers, digital books, social-media marketing, and a slow but much-needed revitalization of indie retail. I also recognize that deep passion is what has sustained many in the industry. But passion only carries us so far. One of the things I am most proud of from my tenure as editor at Q&Q is drawing attention to the issues that those in publishing face as part of their day-today jobs. Low salaries, unhealthy working conditions, and systemic inequalities continue to challenge many. If publishing is going to continue to thrive, it is up to those with power and a voice to make changes. I know the will is there, and I hope that action will follow.
