Permanent Way… and Not So Permanent Way
Our occasional feature takes a look at the changes which have taken place at Long Stanton, Cambridgeshire – where a railway was replaced by a guided busway.
AFTER closure of the Cambridge (Chesterton Jct) to St Ives line to passengers on October 5, 1970, the former Great Eastern Railway route – immortalised in the Flanders and Swann song 'SlowTrain' – remained open until 1992 for aggregate traffic when it was closed and the track subsequently removed.
