THE last two mailbag pick-up points in Scotland, at Stonehaven and Laurencekirk, have been used for the last time, by the Aberdeen-Carstairs postal train. Line-side apparatus for picking up and depositing mailbags from moving trains, first introduced in March 1853, now exists only at five places on British Railways, all in the London Midland Region; four in the London area, and one at Penrith. It is expected that these will be phased out shortly.
