The Martian went where few
self-published novels had gone before, turning author Andy Weir into an overnight sensation before being taken to the big screen by Sir Ridley Scott. His second novel Artemis –a crime caper set on the Moon – was less impressive.
With his third outing, however, the author returns to more comfortable “put the ‘sci’ in sci-fi” territory, and it’s a smart move. While the civilisationending threat of a dying Sun is bigger than anything Weir’s explored before, “science-ing the shit” out of the problem is what the writer is best at.
