We challenged two designers to come up with a fab design, each using the same yarn… which is your fave?

“I’m so thrilled to be part of this issue’s Hook to Hook and it’s my absolute favourite theme. I just knew as soon as I saw the pretty yarn what I wanted to crochet – an adorable penguin snuggled up in a cosy hat and scarf. While creating her I was imagining going on lovely winter walks in crisp and crunchy white snow with my family. Ellie Richards

“I’m incredibly excited to have been invited to this month’s challenge with a winter animals theme. My design is an arctic fox named Chloe inspired by Chloe Kim, an Olympic gold medallist in snowboarding. Chloe’s shape is inspired by peg dolls – my daughter’s very rst favourite toy. While designing her adorable penguin, Lianne imagined walking in the winter with her family, so it’s no surprise she made a cosy hat and scarf set

To get the curved shape on the penguin’s flippers, fold them in half at the top and sew them closed around the last round

Insert the safety eyes on the face, then use black stranded cotton to embroider a couple of eyelashes at the sides of each eye;

For the hat, work a ribbed section in a strip, then turn to work the main section in the row-ends of the rib and finish off with a bobble on the end

■ King Cole Cotton Top DK (78% acrylic, 22% cotton, 100g/260m), 1 ball of each: Yarn A White (4215), Yarn B Mist (4223), Yarn C Teal (4224), Yarn D Rose (4220)

■ A 3mm (US C /2 or D/3) hook

■ 2 safety eyes, 12mm

■ Toy stuffing
