FORGOTTEN GIANTS
Painting by Charles Knight
Humanity never knew the dinosaurs. But Ice Age mammals were different. For tens of thousands of years, human beings lived alongside mammoths, mastodons, wooly rhinoceroses, and other creatures that have since gone extinct.
Those prehistoric people used stone tools, but they were just as clever as you are. They made art. They told stories around the fire. And for millennia, they watched herds of mammoths roam across the landscape, as much an ordinary part of nature as deer might seem to you. People hunted mammoths, painted pictures of mammoths, made sculptures from their ivory tusks. Some cultures even made their homes from the bones of these mighty animals.
