Playing as an adorable fox on a big adventure, Tunic is the little indie that could – and it ought to be on your radar. It’s not just about the fox himself: the rest of this mysterious world has a very cosy palette to it, accentuated by the soft and fuzzy tilt-shift camera that makes it feel similar to Nintendo’s Switch remake of Link’s Awakening, only with an isometric perspective.
But behind that wholesome exterior, Tunic is a surprisingly challenging game, as you quickly encounter enemies that won’t think twice about putting your vulpine hero to the sword. In a nod to the influential Dark Souls series, you have a stamina bar to manage as you dodge-roll, block attacks or sprint away from threats. Level designs, some on the surface and some in underground caverns, also have the same kind of labyrinthine structure as you unlock shortcuts to make the next run a little easier.
