Smash HIITs
Nothing boosts your workout workrate like a pumping Collins-heavy playlist… so we’ve sweat-tested six of the best fitness-friendly in-ears
BEST FOR APPLE USERS
Fuel for your shoving Five minutes on the plug squeezes an hour’s workout time out of these Beats, while 90 minutes fills them right up.
Here I go a-twain You don’t have to be an Apple fan to use these buds: they’ll work with any phone, and there is a Beats app for Android.
BEST FOR SONIC TWEAKAGE
You’re my test friend The Jabra Sound+ app, which includes a hearing test and a fit test to optimise the sound, is simple and easy to navigate.
Don’t drop me now Jabra’s trademarked ShakeGrip coating, to hold the buds in your ear, is made of a liquid silicone rubber compound.
Beats Fit Pro
What’s the story? Think AirPods Pro smarts with gym-friendly design: the ear-gripping Beats Fit Pro pack 9.5mm drivers and the same H1 chip you find in Apple’s buds. That’s used to power adaptive EQ that tweaks the audio to suit your surroundings, plus ANC and a transparency mode.
Spatial audio senses your head movements and shifts the music to create a 360° listening experience; you get a competitive 7hrs of battery life, and the buds are sweat-resistant – although the case isn’t, and there’s no wireless charging.
Note that we’ve listed the dollar price, but UK pricing should be official by the time you read this.
Are they any good? These Beats are excellent on many levels. Unless you really love the earhook design of the Powerbeats Pro, they’re definitely the best workout ’phones in the Apple/Beats range and rival any others at the price.
The highlight is the buds’ unshakeable fit, which is up there with the best in-ears we’ve tested. Firm wingtips hold your ears tight without getting irritating, and that’s backed by big, solid sound, even if top volume could be louder and we’d like more EQ customisation.
The transparency mode works well and the ANC is OK for drowning out gym and traffic noise. Spatial audio adds an interesting extra dimension, creating a real sense that you’ve turned your head away from the bloke ripping that guitar solo.
The battery life lived up to billing: we burned around 15% in an hour with ANC on. And if you’re fully Appled up, the seamless iOS connectivity and switching between iPhone, iPad and MacBook is a dream. Only the bulky case is a letdown: it’s too big to take running.
