ISLAND IN THE FUN
Apple iPhone 14 Pro
The notch is dead, long live the Dynamic Island! Ever since Apple culled the home button and introduced that divisive screen cut-out, the brand’s acolytes (Applytes?) have wondered when the iPhone would follow Android’s lead and shrink it down to almost nothing. But it turns out the bods in Cupertino have been working on something better. An eye-catching fusion of hardware and software, the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped expand-o-lozenge that contains the Face ID camera but is also a vital part of the UI (even if it does sound like a yoga pose). Apps are sucked into it, notifications burst out of it, travel directions and music controls enlarge it, and it splits in two when it has more than one job to do. It floats within a 2000-nit 6.1in Super Retina screen that has a Watch-esque 1Hz always-on mode to display the clock and other important live info, while the back is home to a new 48MP main camera that Apple reckons is twice as good as before in low light. The whole thing’s powered by a six-core A16 chip that’s faster and uses less power, so the battery should last up to 23hrs. Your move, Samsung.
