LOOSE CANON
Canon EOS R5
from £4199/ canon.co.uk
Canon’s latest mirrorless camera has been the worst-kept secret in photography… but when you’ve got something that sounds this good, who could resist dropping hints about it?
• Fast, not furious
The full-frame EOS R5 is capable of shooting 8K footage at up to 30fps, 4K at up 120fps, and up to 20 stills per second aided by its electronic shutter. There’s then the small matter of a 45MP sensor that Canon claims could be its best ever, a Digic X processor that allows for ludicrously fast autofocus, and 5-axis in-body image stabilisation. Even the electronic viewfinder is a stonker, with 5.76million dots - more than any other Canon camera. We counted them all with an abacus.
• Faster pussycat
If you’re shooting in 8K, the EOS R5 has something called Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for stunningly intelligent autofocus, with an advanced animal mode that’s able to recognise the difference between dogs, cats and birds. In fact, it’ll support a staggering 5940 AF points for photography and 4500 for filming, all while you keep a close eye on the tits in your back garden with the fully articulating 3.15in, 2100k-dot touchscreen.
EVEN THE VIEWFINDER IS A STONKER, WITH 5.76M DOTS - MORE THAN ANY OTHER CANON
• Not so fast
The numbers involved here are mind-boggling even for a Vital Stats page, but you can add an ISO range of 100-51,200 into the mix, and a new 2130mAh battery that has a 14% bigger capacity than the lithium-ion cell it replaces. And if all this feels like overkill for your snapping skills, the cheaper EOS R6 is available for a mere £2499, comes with a 20.1MP sensor and shoots 4K.
