THE GT3 RS
Written by Lee Sibley
So the Dakar has established itself, despite initial cynicism around its launch, as not just a worthy 911, but a bloody good one at that. Sure, it pushes the boundaries of capabilities while remaining true to that Porsche 911 spirit, but it’s not the highlight of the 992 range, and not the 911 that the innovative 992-generation should be best remembered for.
For as great as the Dakar is as a new venture, a sceptic will still say (with some merit) it’s merely an expensive GTS with a lift kit. Indeed, it uses a GTS engine, housed inside a GTS-spec body.
At the other end of the ‘Extreme’ 992 sphere you’ll find the GT3 RS. While the Dakar brings genuine off-road capabilities to the 911, the 992 GT3 RS brings convincing race-car pedigree on a level never seen before. Better yet, it achieves this while remaining true to that quintessential 911 remit of being useable on the public road, thereby harmonising the ultimate juxtaposition of ‘road or race’ that sports cars for years have tried to navigate. The engineering behind the GT3 RS to achieve this is not short of ludicrous, and so it is this which I firmly believe is the king of the extreme 992s, and the car this generation should be best remembered for.
