CUT: What’s your background as an artist?
BARRATT: I’m a painter who also writes and works with performance and my own voice. I trained in fine art. I studied at Glasgow School of Art, and I really wanted to learn how to make oil paintings. I got to do an MA at the Slade in London and I found it quite experimental there in the best possible way. There are a couple of tutors who really encouraged me to tune into the writing that I was doing. My writing is pretty much always in collaboration with other artists, so I’ve been invited in the past by painters to write texts that respond to their exhibitions. It’s not necessarily writing about the work like a press release would. It offers another lens onto the work.
