AFTER first appearing in these pages for winning the Yorkshire cross-country colts’ title in 1971, Seb Coe now graces our front cover as the most powerful man in athletics. In a 32-page section inside this issue, we celebrate his 60th birthday and look back on a career of dramatic ups and downs.
One thing is certain, Coe specialises in resurrection. This was best illustrated when bouncing back from 800m defeat at the 1980 Moscow Olympics to win 1500m gold. Yet there was also his comeback at the 1984 Olympics, when he retained his 1500m title following an illness-hit spell in 1982-83. Or how about his 1986 European 800m win, where he recovered from a poor season to beat an in-form Steve Cram and Tom McKean in Stuttgart?
