THE PARALYMPICS was built up to be an impending catastrophe, fraught with worries about lack of funding, lack of support from the local organising committee and Brazilian fans and serious concerns over fan and athlete security. But the fears did not come to fruition and it emerged smelling of roses.
Even the problem of Russia, banned by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for the country’s own part in the state-orchestrated doping, went relatively unspoken for the duration of the Games.
