Continental has integrated brake into
Deepdrive’s hub motor
IN-WHEEL ELECTRIC motors have been on the cards for years and so have ‘dry’ electromechanical brake-by-wire systems that do away with hydraulics completely. Now two German companies, Continental and Deepdrive, are collaborating on anew product that combines the two technologies and is due to enter production in 2026.
Deepdrive has its roots in the Technical University of Munich’s student motorsport team of 10 years ago. After gaining experience in the mainstream automotive industry, a group of those engineers got together to found the company in 2021. What they came up with is a dual-rotor, radial-flux motor that uses 50% less magnetic material, 80% less iron and no rare-earth materials in the magnets.
