Wait a minute. Are we telling you we’ve produced a new front cover… out of a DeLorean? Great Scott, we have, and it's on sale today.

Contrary to the words of Doc Brown, we required the use of some roads to, er, road test the DeLorean DMC-12, and it was Richard Heseltine who went back to the future to tell the story of the famous Belfast Child. “As with any low-slung car, the impression of speed builds quickly, even if you’re not actually travelling that fast,” he says, while avoiding the temptation to push the needle to 88mph. He wasn’t in the mood to see some serious s***.

Our publisher reckons this is the best issue to date, but we’ll let you be the judge of that. Among his favourite features he lists the photos from the Sainsbury Archive, an ode to Giovanni Michelotti and the revamped Ignition. In fact, our ace art director Roy McCarthy has given the design of the mag a little tickle this month, so we hope you like the subtle changes.

In a Classic.Retro.Modern. exclusive, we reveal the Car & Classic website’s most searched for cars in 2021. Unfortunately, there’s no place in the top ten for the Proton Impian, but you’ll never guess what finished top.

Elsewhere, reader Adam White takes his Land Rover Defender on an epic adventure to Scotland, while Gavin shares his love of the Chevrolet Epica. There’s more ‘epicness’ in the form of an Innocenti Mini 120L restoration. The Porsche 944 is the subject of this month’s Ultimate Guide, while we tell you how to buy the best Subaru Impreza Turbo. We also explain why the Mk2 is the Mazda MX-5 to buy now and how to add power steering to your classic car. There’s even room for the ‘fangtastic’ Skoda 1100 Super Sport, the Airbump-clad Citroën C4 Cactus, a federalised Fiat 124 Spider and Sam Glover’s Citroën BX. Our publisher might have a point; maybe this is the best of the nine issues.

Classic.Retro.Modern. is the start of something special. A new monthly magazine focusing on established, emerging and modern classics. The cars of the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s might be familiar, but the stories we tell will be anything but. Classic.Retro.Modern. isn’t here to fit in.

Every month, our readers can expect superb writing, great photography, quality print, excellent design, and an ability to think differently. The cars will be accessible, attainable, and relevant. Our mix will be eclectic. Discover the joys of owning a Reliant Regal before turning over to read about why you should be considering a Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 5. The Jaguar E-Type rubbing shoulders with the Vauxhall Calibra. The Mini 1275 GT sharing space with the Fiat Panda Mk1.

Classic.Retro.Modern. is fresh enough to appeal to young drivers taking their first tentative steps in the world of classic cars. Established to appeal to knowledgeable enthusiasts who have seen (and read) it all. The magazine will be as at home on a coffee table as it is at a local ‘cars and coffee’ event.

On-sale monthly, it’s packed with classic cars. Regulars such as buying guides, reader restorations and news will be accompanied by drive stories and features designed to excite, inform, and enthuse. Classic.Retro.Modern. will be printed on high-quality paper and filled with great photography and superb design.

The team has a long and successful track record, consisting of Ian Robertson as Publisher, Richard Dredge in as Editor and Gavin Braithwaite-Smith taking the role of Deputy Editor, alongside other well-respected contributors. And that’s all backed up by a group of incredibly talented classic car nuts that look after the design, website and behind the scenes, it’s very much a case that we’ve assembled our dream team.

It's a work of art

Look forward to every issue. It's beautiful, finely crafted and I love the old adverts in between. I can't wait until every issue arrives. Reviewed 29 April 2022
