Home Farmer Magazine  |  May 2017
Welcome to the first Home Farmer of summer. We have a really diverse line-up of features for you, from DIY plant supports and growing exotic veg, to Angora rabbits and wild summer medicine, via red tape for the smallholder and rhubarb from regular plot to plate expert, Gaby Bartai – a real cross section of home farming, all rounded off with a delicious Mayflower wine recipe that epitomises the first few weeks of summer. We have all our regulars too – Dot Tyne’s smallholder diary, David Winnard foraging for St George’s mushrooms, and Claire Waring explaining the swarming instinct in bees together with lots of tips on recognising early swarming signs in your own hives. And finally, we also have an opportunity for readers to enter their treasured pork pie recipes into a competition, and an original new series from Seren Hollins as she goes back in time to unravel the 1950s concept of a ‘good housewife’ ‒ a truly fascinating read which also resurrects some of the better ideas from the past which still deserve a place in modern life. It’s not deadly serious, of course, but there’s already enough of that around. We certainly enjoyed putting it all together, and hope you get as much fun from reading it – and putting into practise many of the great ideas.
