We have liftoff

It’s been one of the most awaited
launches in history, but finally the James
Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been
successfully launched into space on board
an Ariane 5 rocket. Liftoff, pictured here,
took place at 13:20 CET from Europe’s
spaceport in French Guiana on Christmas
Day 2021. The JWST will observe deep
space using its many onboard
instruments, including its huge
6.5-metre-wide, 18-segment
gold-coated mirror.
