This issue celebrates the 50th
anniversary of the Mini's fi rst
Monte Carlo win. In January
1964 Paddy Hopkirk and Henry
Liddon made Mini history
by winning the Monte Carlo
Rally. Back then a British car
winning an international rally
was a very big deal. It was
the swinging 60s and all eyes
were on Britain. It was a boost
for GB and also a boost for the
Mini. It heralded success for the
Cooper S in many more rallies for
BMC's Works team, worldwide
success among privateers and
it also put the Mini in the mind
of the ordinary motorist. The
Mini was cool and everybody
wanted one! This success was
one of the most signifi cant
moments in Mini's history.
Inside this issue you will fi nd a feature on how the BMC
Competitions Department organised the teams and the cars
for the Monte Carlo Rally and we share Paddy Hopkirk's own
memories of the event. Paddy very kindly allowed us access to
his own memorabilia from the rally, including some photos which
he took himself, which have not been published previously.
The feature cars in this issue follow the Monte 50th theme and include a
1963 Cooper S used in motorsport, a standard 1071cc Cooper S, to remind
us what 33 EJB would have been like as standard, plus a 1990 Mini City
that has been given a fab rally-inspired retro look.
In 2014 we'll be able to celebrate more of the
Mini's history as we reach anniversaries such
as 55 years since the launch of the Mini in 1959
and 50 years since the launch of the Mini Moke.
