‘I was completely set on a period home when we moved from Cheshire to Glasgow for Ben’s job, and this house gave me that goosebump feeling. The living room was freezing and the décor was pretty horrible, with white wallpaper and a dirty green carpet, but we loved the high ceilings and beautiful cornicing. We wanted to inject warmth and cosiness into here. After getting the walls and ceiling re-skimmed, we sanded the floorboards ourselves and uncovered hidden window panelling - a nice surprise. The fireplace had been bricked up, but we had a new Chesney’s log burner installed by Scottish Stove Centre. It’s great - we could sit here in our shorts if we wanted! Our best bargain is the reclaimed surround, which cost £20 on Facebook Marketplace. I’d always wanted a dark room with brass accents. We picked Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue, and kept the features white so they pop. I’d badgered Ben for the mustard velvet armchair and footstool for ages as I loved it so much - now he’s the one who always sits there. Behind it we’ve got maps of Berlin and Barcelona, which remind us of holidays together. We did have a Persian rug, but it felt very busy, so we relaxed it with this big natural rug instead. We didn’t need the distraction on the floor, and this is great for hiding pet hair.’
