The brain is the organ that is responsible for the whole functioning of the body through a series of feedback systems that we know as the nervous system. Specific brain functions include learning, memory and the ability to recall pieces of information, and it is these functions that can noticeably reduce when the brain is undernourished, stressed, exhausted or during age-related impairment. There are several nutrients to be aware of that are connected to brain function. These include, B vitamins, especially choline, vitamin B12 and folate, in addition to zinc, iodine, iron, vitamin D and omega-3 essential fatty acids in the form of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA, DHA).
In a vegan diet, several of these nutrients are absent or may be at lower levels. The good news is, with some careful planning plus supplementation, a good intake can be achieved.
