Published twice a year by Virginia Commonwealth University and New Virginia Review Inc, the Blackbird online journal of literature and the arts is a paying market with a content of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, reviews, plays, visual art, new media and video essays. All content is presented ‘in inventive arrangements with an eye toward revealing the process of their creation’. Sections of the journal can be read on the website.
No submission should have been previously published and although simultaneous submissions will be considered there is the usual requirement to let the journal know if the piece becomes accepted elsewhere.
For poetry submissions send 2-6 single-spaced poems in one document but query first if the page count exceeds ten pages. For fiction and non fiction submissions use double spacing, submit one piece only and query first if the word count is over 8,000 words.
