19 WARREN SMITH UBANGI STOMP
Record Label Sun
Released 1956
Warren Smith was a country crooner who discovered his inner rockabilly rebel on his two most acclaimed Sun sides – the Johnny Cash-penned Rock’n’Roll Ruby and the outrageous Ubangi Stomp. The slightly questionable jungle-inspired lyrics – ‘Well I rocked through Africa and rolled off the ship and seen them natives doin’ an odd lookin’ skip’ – would raise eyebrows today, but only made for an exotic vibe back in the ’50s. Warren left Sun and was following his true calling by 1959, regularly hitting the country charts. Unfortunately his career faltered and addiction to liquor and pills, not to mention an 18-month prison sentence for armed robbery, hindered later progress. Happily he battled through to enjoy the first years of the rockabilly renaissance.
