LETTER OF THE MONTH
Manoj Badale, owner of Rajasthan Royals, said the future of Test cricket could be short oncea-year events like Wimbledon

Building for the future
“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” So said Abraham Lincoln (apparently) and his words came back to me when I listened to the eye-opening Tailenders podcast interview with Manoj Badale [the Rajasthan Royals owner]. His words filled me with the same sense of existential dread about the future of the red-ball game as expressed in the Wisden podcast.
It can feel that those with money and influence are shaping the future of the sport (as with Mr Lincoln’s words) and doing so to increase their profits. Badale’s notion that there could be a window in the calendar for a few weeks of Test match cricket like Wimbledon tennis fails to consider that Wimbledon exists alongside three other Grand Slams and numerous other tournaments, with little difference in how the game is played between each. There is no analogy for cricket.
