I have a WhatsApp group called ‘Project Trent Bridge’ filled largely with ringers who played a one-off game last season. We took inspiration from Australia’s valiant attempt at defending 128 in the fourth Test of the 2005 Ashes, where they almost exclusively bowled Brett Lee and Shane Warne up until the game’s climax, but crucially didn’t open with Warne, only bringing him on after Michael Kasprowicz had leaked 19 from his first two overs. It’s often said that had Warne opened the bowling that day, it would have been Australia, not England, who would have gone into the Oval Test 2-1 up.
