SMALL STEPS BIG CHANGE
TRAIL RUNNING
Inclusivity starts with you, explains Sabrina
WHO IS SABRINA?
Sabrina Pace-Humphreys is an ultrarunner, activist, mother of four and grandmother of three. She is co-founder of Black Trail Runners, and is the author of Black Sheep: A Story of Rural Racism, Identity and Hope
“ Many of you reading this will know that a massive passion of mine – my purpose in fact – is to make trail running much more inclusive than it currently is. Every day I work hard to challenge the perception – often elevated by certain brands and media – of what constitutes a trail runner and what the industry has told us, and continues to tell us, about how you need to look, train, eat and BE when you are enjoying the great outdoors via this wholesome activity.
I’m committed to challenging outdated perceptions that I refer to as old-school stinking thinking.
Amplifying diverse voices
In the year 2000, I co-founded the community and campaigning charity Black Trail Runners. Why? Because for so many years I had stood on the start line of trail races, looked around and not seen anyone who looked like me. I would ask myself, ‘Where are the black and brown people?’ And then I would tell myself that they must be ahead of me or behind me. The truth was, they just weren’t there.
