Before the hamstring pain kicked in and the migraine appeared
ROYAL PARKS HALF MARATHON
LONDON
Rachel Ifans encounters more obstacles in one race than she has in all her other races put together – but even that wasn’t enough to put her off wanting to return to this crowdpleaser of a city race next year
First up, a bit of context. I came to this race with a spot of hamstring pain; a persistent ache that increased gradually over miles and which usually saw me Jeffing by the end of a long run. During what should have been my taper, I’d been slathering on ibuprofen gel, praying to the gods of muscle recovery (“All hail, Voltaren!”) and my husband had been going at the offending area with the massage gun.
Unsure whether I’d make it round the course, I’d decided to not record my Royal Parks Half Marathon (RPHM) run and just enjoy the day out instead.
