#WRTRIBE CLUB OF THE MONTH

FRECKLETON & WARTON RUNNING CLUB

Freckleton & Warton Running club (fwrc.co.uk) is so much more than just a regular running club for its many members. Its motto – Everyone’s a Winner – sums up the club’s ethos and the slogan is printed on club members’ shirts.

“The club really lives its values,” says member Melissa Depport. “Every age, fitness level and ability is welcomed and catered for. We have members who can run sub three-hour marathons and members who clock a 45-minute 5K. We have ultra runners and we have people who have no intention of running more than 10K, and who simply love running for their own reasons.

“The club celebrates everybody’s achievements in terms of what they mean to that person. I love this approach and I feel so proud to be a part of such a wonderful and inclusive club,” she adds.

During the various lockdowns, the group set up weekly challenges to keep motivation high. “Since real-world meet-ups have been allowed, the whole coaching team has pulled together to help keep everybody moving, getting fitter and improving. They’ve kept things interesting by adding in relay runs, trail runs, themed nights and socials.

“I think it can be daunting to join a running club, especially for women because you worry you might not be good enough. I think it also still feels like there is some stigma around being slower than men, but this club completely challenges that.”
