VEGETARIAN WOMEN HAVE HIGHER RISK OF HIP FRACTURES
It’s time to check in with your diet, whatever it is, and ensure you’re eating a balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, micronutrients and water.
Research published this August, in the BMC Medicine journal, revealed that, compared with meat eaters and pescatarians (people who eat fish but not meat), middle-aged women in the vegetarian diet group had a higher risk of hip fractures.
Vegetarian diets can vary widely; the research didn’t aim to show that these diets are detrimental to health, rather that vegetarian diets tended to have lower intakes of nutrients linked with bone and muscle health. These include protein, calcium and other micronutrients, all essential for bone mineral density and muscle mass.
