HOW DO I...
Look after my runner’s knee injury?
If you’re suffering from pain beneath your kneecap, you may have what’s known as ‘runner’s knee’. How can you help ease your symptoms?
The patellofemoral joint is the articulation between the kneecap and the groove it glides along at the front of the femur. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is when pain develops at the front of your knee, beneath the kneecap.
“This most commonly occurs in long-distance runners and athletes who carry out repetitive impact activities,” explains Khalid Al-Dadah, a specialist knee surgeon at New Victoria Hospital (newvictoria. co.uk). “Symptoms tend to come on during the aggravating activity and are relieved by rest. Squatting and kneeling for long periods of time can also exacerbate symptoms, as they increase the forces going through the patella.”
