POST-RACE RECOVERY
The saying ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint’ is totally right for a reason. Write your name on your race bib so that people can shout your name as you run past. The boost it gives you, having hundreds of random strangers call out your name, is like no other feeling.
A strong mind
If you can’t think of something personal and specific to you, ‘a smile a mile’ is a good mantra to have on race day
The main thing to remember when you go into race day is that you’ve done all of the work and these last 26.2 miles are your glorious victory lap. There are strategies you can use on race day to stop your mind from playing tricks on you. Distraction techniques, such as counting, listening to music and reciting mantras, are really useful to keep your brain occupied.
Counting and using maths is a useful tool to split the distance up into smaller and more manageable chunks. Ahalf marathon is basically just 10 miles rounded up, 10 miles is just five miles out and back, and five miles is totally doable.
