Arthur C. Clarke shortlist
The shortlist for the 38th Arthur C. Clarke Award, given annually for the best speculative fiction novel published in the UK in the previous year, has been announced as: Chain-Gang All-Stars, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah; The Ten Percent Thief, Lavanya Lakshminarayan; In Ascension, Martin MacInnes; The Mountain In The Sea, Ray Nayler; Some Desperate Glory, Emily Tesh; Corey Fah Does Social Mobility, Isabel Waidner. The winner, who will receive an award of £2,024, will be announced on 24 July.

Declining membership
Following a series of controversies, including accusations of racism, the resignation of its leadership and the Big Five publishers in the US ending all ending their support for the organisation, the membership of the Romance Writers of America has fallen from 10,000 to 2,000 in just five years. The result has been a devastating impact on the RWA’s finances, leaving it about $3 million in debt to hotels for its annual conference, and consequently in June the once hugely powerful and influential writers’ body filed for bankruptcy.
