I was always a voracious reader and I do remember as a child wanting to write a book like The Hobbit.
Fast-forward: a degree in History/English, followed by a career as a physiotherapist. I was a child, having fun, and observing the world. Finally I thought: if I don’t do it now, I never will.
In WH Smith I bought the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook, a notepad and some pencils. I wrote articles and short stories. I paid to have them critiqued. I realised I wasn’t JRR Tolkien, or indeed Hilary Mantel, but importantly, I did realise that I had a fertile imagination.
