As one of our most-used pieces of software, Microsoft Word is a source of perennial problems for writers, not least when a major upgrade moves, alters or even removes wellloved features. Other Wordy queries this month are from users who struggle to use its character spacing correctly, or remove image backgrounds.
Q For years, I have been working with styles in Word 2010 with no problem but for various reasons I recently updated my copy of Word to 2016. This is when the issue started. I have been having problems editing and updating them in this new version. Do you have any idea what is going on?
A This is a large jump from one version to the other and if you had upgraded from Word 2013 you would probably not be having these problems. Word 2013 works well with 2016 – as 2013 did with the 2010 version –but leapfrogging from 2010 to 2016 may have brought some compatibility issues, although there is no saying this is entirely the reason that your styles are misbehaving.
