Every time they sit down to write, poets and short story writers have a task that is not shared by authors of longer works or factual pieces. They have to come up with a new, inspired idea to fuel their next piece of writing. Even the most imaginative of writers can find it an exhausting process. There is an upside, of course. Their poem or story rides on the crest of the creative wave. A burst of energy fuels its first draft from start to finish. There’s little chance of getting bored by the emerging piece, and then inevitably committing the crime of boring the reader.
