It’s good to have something exceptional to write about. Maybe easier too if you go somewhere new, interesting and with things about it that would appeal to a wide range of people. However, cherished ideas can present problems, not least with the travel involved. I have always wanted to visit Easter Island, ever since I came across Thor Heyerdahl’s book Aku Aku many years ago. But – and it is a big but – the only way to get there is via Chile and to say that the cost is huge is something of an understatement (the island is the best part of 4,000 miles from Chile). I fear it is one dream that will never become reality, though there might be other ways in which I could write something about it without a visit. Perhaps fixing on an idea that you quickly rule out should be followed by more detailed thinking about just how whatever it is might feature in your writing.
