Going spare
Qantas may have been the last airline to transport a spare engine using an underwing pod, but the Australian flag carrier and its Boeing 747s were by no means the first to employ the turbojet or turbofan transportation tactic. No fewer than six aircraft – the Boeing 707, 747, Douglas DC-8, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and Vickers VC10/Super VC10 – had the capacity to move additional engines underwing.
