Although it’s tempting to imagine spiral arms as physical chains of stars circling the galactic core, this cannot actually be the case due to an effect known as differential rotation – the fact that stars and other material close to the centre orbit much more rapidly than those further out. Any such chains of stars would have long since wound themselves tightly into the bulge and disappeared.
