I remember when the very first exoplanet was confirmed. It was 1992, and the nowdecommissioned Arecibo Observatory had revealed a brand-new terrestrial world – and later a collection of others – around pulsar PSR B1257+12. But it wasn’t just the minds of the discoverers that ran wild when working out what these farflung planets were like on the surface, it was also the public. The discovery of worlds beyond our Solar System really fired the imagination. To date, almost 6,000 exoplanets have been found using various techniques and missions. This issue, we take you on a tour of 20 of the strangest in our cover feature – from those with exotic weather to others that truly defy physics.
