Perch will often shoal together, hunting their prey in packs. Shoaling is a loose term for any group of fish that associate and interact with one another on a
social level, and fish shoals may have individuals of different sizes and age
classes, sometimes different species. It is a highly complex and sophisticated
social behaviour that has evolved to fulfil many functions, most notably:
predator avoidance, reproductive success and foraging behaviour.
