Q Whenever I go for a run, I often get pains in one of my knees and find myself having to stop. What can this be and does it mean I should stop running? Nathan, Cardiff
A There are lots of causes for possible pains in the knees, and the first thing I would look at is your gait, i.e. the way in which you run, or the positioning of your limbs as you run. If you are turning your foot outwards that can be a cause of wear on your knee joints and cause pain. Get your GP to check your knee joints out and possibly ask for a referral to a physiotherapist, who can help better assess your gait and give you some strengthening exercises to do.
