REVIEW OF THE YEAR
PrEP
In February, the UK’s PROUD study says PrEP treatment was extremely effective in stopping HIV transmission.
2015 really has been the year for PrEP. The UK’s PROUD study results were reported in February, showing us how PrEP works in the real world, so when men know they are taking it, compared with men who are not.
In the men who weren’t taking PrEP there was an infection rate of 9%, much higher than anyone predicted there would be. By contrast only three men in the PrEP arm got HIV and in all three cases further examination showed they weren’t taking PrEP at the time.
