“Washington DC is Hollywood for the ugly.” US elections are grandiose, disposable displays of pomp: too loud, too expensive, and far too long. It’s the show of our lives, but we don’t get to switch channel when it’s over.
Politicians must not only be able to win votes, they must know how to do the job afterwards. It’s an intricate science with laws, theories and experiments. But it’s not one of nature’s mysteries; political science is a Gordian knot of human creation. We tied it, and, as history teaches, we can untie — sometimes even cut — it.
