WHEN IT COMES TO TRENDS, avoiding reiterations in menswear can be tricky for brands to navigate. This season there were plenty of perennial themes that designers revamped and refreshed as well as plenty of new elements of frivolity.
Stepping into a recurring role and transitioning over the seasons, the military trend found its way on to the Balmain and Alexander McQueen catwalks. While previous seasons focused on utility and urban interpretations, this was a more enriching and royal affair, with a full regalia of gold-piping embellishments, metallic flourishes and rich deep reds and velvets. The hue was also a prominent fixture on the runways, with every shade from sequinned cherry tracksuits Burberry) to rich-red overcoats from Dior Homme. Brands such as Moschino, Fendi and af Simons reinvented the wheel — or rather the check — when it came to prints while the Seventies’ trend evolved with plenty of florals from Roberto Cavalli and crushed velvet from Topman Design.
