As one of the most southerly points in Europe, Malta boasts the typically outstanding weather and beautiful sea views that you’d expect of any Mediterranean country. But this isn’t your run-of-the-mill Costa Del Sol-esque beach destination.
The country’s history of occupation by everyone from the Romans and Moors to the fascinating knights of the Order of St John, has given rise to a unique culture, where ancient Arabic influences meet ostentatious displays of Catholic devotion.
It is also famed for being awarded the George Cross for bravery during World War II, after withstanding hundreds of air raids and siege by the Nazis for almost 2½ years.
