It’s not easy being different, as any man growing up gay will know. As a kid, all you want to do is fit in, or, better still, blend in. Hiding in a crowd makes life much easier.
As the sexually diverging kid with NHS specs, teenage acne and big hair, I was, therefore, screwed. But you know what? Although I never thought so at the time, in retrospect I’d not have had it any other way. I made people laugh - funny people got hit less - and found out for myself that it’s true that bullies are cowards. You stand up, they stand down.
