There was a lot happening in 1994: the O.J. Simpson trial, war in Sarajevo, the first multiracial elections in South Africa. In domestic news, I was showcasing some really dodgy home highlights and a lot of double denim. That’s relevant because I think I was an “obvious” lesbian – and that made a difference at work in those days.
In 1994, I had just started a new job and I was buying a copy of Gay Times – I know, I know but DIVA didn’t exist yet – from a newsstand on The Strand. Already, it felt like a slightly furtive, deep breath kind of purchase. So I remember the absolute stomach-plummeting horror of turning and seeing my boss in the queue behind me.
