THE DOCTOR BRINGS ACE TO GABRIEL CHASE, Perivale, in 1883. The house is occupied by Josiah Samuel Smith, who keeps the domestic staff in a comatose state behind the walls and a creature locked up in the cellar.

Also in the house are Redvers Fenn-Cooper, a famous explorer who has lost his mind, and Ernest Matthews, a clergyman who has travelled from Oxford to challenge Smith over his “blasphemous” Darwinian theories.

Ace discovers that this is the same house that, 100 years later, she will burn to the ground in a fit of rage and terror. She flees to the cellar – actually the control room of a spaceship – where two insect-like creatures in formal evening dress bear down on her, but manages to escape with the help of Nimrod, Josiah’s Neanderthal butler.

About Doctor Who Magazine

“History sometimes gives us a terrible shock, and that is because we don’t quite fully understand... We’re all too small to realise its final pattern.” Doctor Who’s first journey in 1963 took viewers back to the Stone Age. Since then the TARDIS has visited many other landmarks in a unique chronicle of the Doctor’s favourite planet. Purely historical stories were once a mainstay of the series, but for more than 50 years significant periods in Earth’s past have provided evocative settings for more fantastical adventures. This unprecedented guide takes a trip back in time with the people, places and classic episodes that are essential parts of Doctor Who history.
